We’re Happy Little Vegemites Fighting Australian Super Bugs

The world thought Aussies were just bred tough, those rosy cheeks and bright as bright can be attitudes probably owe a little of that to our good old Aussie Vegemite.

An ingredient found in Vegemite could hold the key to the battle against superbugs – but don’t run out to buy jars of the stuff yet.
An ingredient found in Vegemite may be able to help combat some antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” that kill thousands, a study suggests.

But consuming jars of the popular yeast extract before your next hospital visit isn’t the answer to warding off potentially deadly staph infections.

Researchers said their results were achieved by administering megadoses of nicotinamide, more commonly known as niacin or vitamin B3, far beyond what any normal diet would provide.

The research, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, found high doses of the vitamin increased by 1000 times the ability of immune cells to kill staph bacteria.

“Antibiotics are wonder drugs, but they face increasing problems with resistance by various types of bacteria,” said Associate Professor Adrian Gombart from Oregon State University’s Linus Pauling Institute.”This could give us a new way to treat staph infections that can be deadly, and might be used in combination with current antibiotics,” he said.Assoc Prof Gombart warned people against taking high doses of the vitamin because there was no evidence normal diets or vitamin B3 supplements could prevent or treat bacterial infection.Australian Professor Lyn Gilbert, the director of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, said the study was plausible, but it would be a difficult and expensive task to test the findings in human trials. However, she said it was good science that explained the mechanisms at work to eliminate the infectious organisms from the blood.

The researchers used laboratory animals and human blood to show that megadoses of vitamin B3 increased the numbers and effectiveness of neutrophils, a particular type of white blood cells that can kill harmful bacteria.

One of the most serious staph infections, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, was part of the study.

Researchers said the widespread use of antibiotics had boosted the emergence and spread of MRSA.

When used in human blood, clinical doses of vitamin B3 wiped out the staph infection in just a few hours.

“This vitamin is surprisingly effective in fighting off and protecting against one of today’s most concerning public health threats,” said senior co-author Dr George Liu, an infectious disease expert at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre.

Sylvester Stallones Half Sibling Toni Ann Filiti has passed away, Just weeks after losing Son.

Another Death in the Stallone Family. Toni Ann Filiti Passed away over the weekend, losing her battle with lung cancer.

Toni Ann Filiti (Sylvesters half sibling) lost her battle with lung cancer at their mum Jackie’s Santa Monica, California, home on Sunday. She was 48.

According to a report from omg!, Stallone’s Mother told the  New York Daily News that Sylvester is taking the news hard.

“He said he can’t take any more pain,” his Mother told the newspaper. “He said he’ll always be there for her son. … What a terrible month – first Sage and now Toni. It’s hard. At least they’re together now in heaven.”

Toni Ann Filiti left UCLA Hospital shortly before her death, choosing to die at her mother’s home.

“I was holding her in my arms,” Jackie Stallone said. “I had just washed [her] face and told her how pretty she looked, and she just fell asleep. … She’s too young to go, but she wasn’t feeling any pain.”

Condolences are certainly in order for the Stallone family.it’s tragic that they’ve suffered two such horrific losses in such a short time and that both were so young.

Let Sage and Toni both rest in peace and let the Stallone family find peace in knowing they are in a better place.

200 Entries and counting.

This is my 200th entry into DirtyDazz.  I’ve dribbled some shit over the last couple of months, but I feel better for it.

I’ve had comments with people praising my efforts, I’ve had people look down at me also. What I’ve learnt along the way is that it doesn’t really matter what people think of me, it’s how I think or feel about myself. This is probably the hardest lesson I’ve had to learn, even now, I’m still learning the skilful technique of not giving a shit of what others think, tho’ it’s not always easy.

I come to realise not so long ago, that my biggest critic was actually myself. I didn’t like the fact that I allowed myself to be taken advantage of those times in life and I didn’t like the person I became, because of those situations.

The tides are turning…

you must hammer and forge yourself into one.

Changing face

I’ve decided to change my “about me” page and removed the negativity from it, as I stated in the re-write I’ve learnt to say “bugger it” again. I’d say it due to understanding things a little better than before, I’ve come to accept that I did have or still do have issues within myself. So here’s to a new outlook on the site, I’ll probably still gripe about shit from time to time, I am after all English (Pommy) so whining is in my blood, just ask anyone. 😛

I feel a lot more relaxed these days, even when I’m not, I have kind of learnt to control it, switch off or alter the thought processes, so to speak.

I know I’ve said this several times now, but I can not express it enough, how important knowledge is. Just understanding is a powerful tool to help fight depression, Bi-polar or any mental illness for that matter.

Here’s a couple of links I have used for research to get a better understanding.

Black Dog reading list. Lots of great info there.

Depression.com.au This site I have learnt a lot from, they cover just about every mental illness.

Anyway, that’s it for me for now.Have a wicked weekend all.

Short Term Memory Loss is not always a bad thing.

I was thinking the other day (yeah I know, scary) but, I was thinking about my memory, or lack of it.

I often read the news paper while doing my do in the throne room, ya know, the dunny.

Well, when doing crosswords or puzzles, I sometimes don’t fill in the required fields if I can complete it without writing the answers. So the next day I go to visit the throne room, I get to do the puzzles all over again lol.. No shit, well.. Hmm, no punt intended. we’ll leave that one there..

There are a number benefits in having short-term memory. I would state them, but I can’t think of them at this moment, maybe I’ll get back to you in a year or so… ha.

eStore-au back on track in Australia

Well, I finally heard back from the ATO about my ABN and got it all sorted. I was a little concerned for a bit there. They said they’d been trying to contact me for the last week or so.But all’s well that ends well and now I have my Australian business Number again. It came at a good time actually, as I’m close to receiving my first pay-out from commission sales with ClixGalor. Not a lot for 2 months work lol, but at least it’s covering the costs of running the websites I have. Like I said in the past, it’s all a big learning curve and I’m still happy with the results considering I really have little idea in what I’m doing, well, obviously I have an idea, but, you get my drift.

It’s constant work for a one man band to keep a website up to date, adding, removing information, tracking down sales or leads, finding new clients to add.. the list goes on. lol.

Best I get cracking again, I kind of slackened off a little over the last couple of weeks, things were starting to get to me a little I guess. But I’m past that now. There’s Gold in dem darn hills!

Small steps..

Mork Calling Orson, Come in Orson – I can’t, we’re under attack by Earthlings!

The earthlings are coming, the earthlings are coming!!

So for the days of the little green men landing on earth, to take over our planet and suck it dry of its resources, the Human race have beaten them to it, not only are we not content is destroying our own world, “we” now have plans to start mining outer space..  The Moon, Asteroids, The Stars and Beyond! check this out.

Material on the moon, such as the all famous American flag, is considered to be the property of the US, according to the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. However, they do not own the land on which it was planted, say heritage experts.

THE space landing was one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind.

Reaching Mars represented the next evolution in space exploration.

But if space colonists plan to bulldoze over the dusty landing sites and build a string of intergalactic McDonald’s, they’d best think again.

Enter Doctor Alice Gorman, the Australian whose task it is to heritage-list space sites before humans set up shop there and ruin everything.

“We aren’t valuing space science legacy,” Dr Gorman said.

“It’s about recognising things that are important to people and giving it a framework for it to be applied.”

Heritage listing doesn’t just apply to the moon, or Mars – it also applies to satellites and debris that has been orbiting throughout the solar system for decades.

The team leader of archaeology at heritage firm, Australian Cultural Heritage Management, Dr Gorman is one of only a handful of people in the world trying to protect the cultural heritage of space exploration.

And if you think space doesn’t need protecting, think again.

Right now, private companies, such as Planetary Resources, are being formed with the intention of mining asteroids and sites on the moon for minerals such as oxygen and gas required for sustained human habitation in space.

“How is that going to happen?,” Dr Gorman said.”Is it fly in and fly out? Or do you set up a mining base on the moon?”Do you do it from an orbital platform?”There’s no architecture around this.”These are the questions the space boffin would like answered.Dr Gorman said the Australian government should learn from the Aboriginal people how important it is to preserve cultural heritage sites that record our history and ancestry.”It’s native title in space,” Dr Gorman said.”Unless Australia can demonstrate their historical presence, then it may be considered to have no rights to that region.””They (Aboriginal people) know to their cost what a political weapon proving native title can be.”

At a time when NASA is fighting for its life, Dr Gorman said space heritage could be a way to invigorate both public and financial interest in space exploration.

Just dropping in

I feel as tho I should have written in here by now, all I can say is I’m still waiting… waiting…  but, I am feeling a bit more confident than I was several months ago. I think I owe a lot of that just to the power of knowledge. It has helped me in many ways, most of all it’s allowed me to pick up on situations that trigger my insecurities, so I can either avoid it or talk myself through it, so to speak. It’s a big learning curve, to retrain your thoughts, or better still to alter them to a better thought pattern. I can’t express how important it is to get an understanding of an illness to fully appreciate what it is.

Anyway, not much to report. Just taking it as it comes at the moment.
